Should you insure your pet?

Should you insure your pets? Is it worth it?

We think, yes!

This is something I've wanted to talk about for a while. This is a receipt from our local veterinary office for one of our cats received last year when she was diagnosed with liver cancer--over 1200 dollars! While I have no complaints about this particular veterinary office and their care was top notch--they even cared for Frankie in her time of need--the fact remains that veterinary care is expensive.

For some, they can't afford their yearly wellness visits, flea and tick medication, or shots--let alone, a visit when their pet is sick.

Many find themselves leveraging what they can afford versus what care their furry loved one needs, which is a hard concept to have to wrap your mind around. It causes a lot of guilt along with the financial strain.

Some use options like CareCredit (not sponsored) if their veterinary office accepts it (mine does!) and some use options like pet insurance. However, this can be tricky as one needs to be able to pay off the bill later if they want to avoid interest accrual.

Personally, I use Trupanion (again, not sponsored). This bill was submitted to Trupanion and about 900 dollars was reimbursed, which is not insignificant! This can be a real game-changer if you have the money upfront and can wait for reimbursement. The amount really added up over time and it took a lot of financial strain off of us considering cancer is a chronic condition, requiring recurring treatment visits. There are many other options as far as pet insurance goes, and you should always do your research and figure out which one is best for you and which premiums fit your budget best!

This gave us a lot more time with our furry friend, and euthanasia did eventually become the final option, but it wasn't due to finances. Her quality of life was the main deciding factor, and it always should be!

This is a really difficult topic to cover or talk about and it brings up a lot of emotions and stress for many.

Personally, I believe everyone who owns an animal should at least have an "in case of emergency" fund put away in case the worst happens--because it might! You'll want to be ready if it ever does.

With love,

Ashley
